2018 Interview ‘William Ah Ket: The first Chinese-Australian barrister’

This lovely portrait features Toylaan Ah Ket as a little girl with her mother and other friends on the tennis court of the Chinese Consulate, c1922. Further details on the CHIA website.

I really enjoyed meeting and talking with Jane Lee, the producer of this episode of ‘History Listen’. She interviewed me about William Ah Ket and the history of Chinese in Melbourne. She’s woven together a lovely program with interviews with descendants and also oral history audio with Toylaan Ah Ket, William’s youngest daughter (now deceased). You can listen to it here.

July 26 2024. My mother went to St Michael’s girls school as a boarder in Melbourne with Toylaan Ah Ket. My mother Roma W Fisher .who later married Hinton E Lowe named me Toylaan. My Great Uncle is Sir Charles Lowe who would have known of William Ah Ket.

Blossom your family history has been most interesting. I now live in Texas USA. I am proud to share the name of Toylaan with your Grandmother. Toylaan A Jones née Lowe.
