2019 Mee How Ah Mouy: Architect and Community Leader

Mee How Ah Mouy, treasurer of the Australian-Chinese Association with friend and colleague William Ah Ket, 1917 (Chinese Museum collection)

Mee How Ah Mouy (1887-1977), architect and community leader, was born in Middle Park, the youngest son of respected businessman and well-known community leader Louey Ah Mouy, and believed to be Australia’s first Chinese Australian architect. My interest in Mee How was sparked by a significant donation of material related to him to the Chinese Museum while I was curator there. This donation includes several hundred of his architectural drawings as well as photographs and documents.

After my talk about the history of the See Yup temple in South Melbourne I was invited back to speak about Mee How Ah Mouy by the City of Port Phillip Library and Heritage Centre on 17 September 2019. Stay tuned for my next talk in 2020!
