2022 ‘At sea!’, Norsk Maritimt Museum, Oslo

One of the things I’ve enjoyed in Norway’s museums is their use of audio in displays. This exhibition explored the history of sailing in Norway in different era by focussing on different fictional characters on a ship in each era. You pushed the button on the floor for English or Norwegian dialogue from the character – in this case a Viking. The foot button was surprisingly satisfying to use! The walrus was part of a the exhibition for children that ran along the bottom of the display about animals and shipping. Captioning for children’s displays were cute too: ‘SHIP’S CAT The cat hunted rats and mice. It was good company and nice to pet’. Simple, personal and to the point. And not patronising as some children-friendly labels can be.
