The idea of ‘folk dress’, like ‘folk art’, is shaped by class. Once you are rich enough what you where is not considered ‘folk dress’. I think it is interesting that the Sami have resisted having their dress labelled as ‘folk dress’ and yet, we still see it displayed in the folk dress exhibition. One of my favourite items was a doll with all the items of dress labelled with their specific names as part of a long-running linguistic program.
